European leaders want to turn ‘Biden’s war’ into ‘Trump’s war.’
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused European countries of trying to persuade the United States to abandon mediation with Moscow and instead turn Ukraine into “Trump’s war.”

“Europeans and the Ukrainian regime are trying to convince Donald Trump to give up his mediation efforts and return to confrontation with Russia,” Lavrov said at the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow.
“In essence, to turn Biden’s war into Trump’s war. Europe is clearly, and very crudely, trying to seize a place at the negotiating table, although from the position it professes: revenge and the desire to deal Russia a strategic defeat. Of course, at the negotiating table they have nothing to do,” he added.
On Saturday, U.S. President Trump sent a letter to NATO members warning that he would not impose new sanctions on Moscow while some allies continue to purchase Russian crude.
“I am ready to impose significant sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed to and begun doing the same and when all NATO nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA,” he wrote on social media.
Turkey, Hungary and Slovakia still import Russian oil, though most European countries stopped after Moscow launched its special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
Lavrov said Moscow would accept only security guarantees for Ukraine that ensure “indivisible security,” so that no one strengthens their security at the expense of their neighbors.
“This is precisely what the West is now trying to do in Ukraine — trying to save it from total disaster,” the Russian diplomat said, accusing the U.N. Secretary of “whitewashing” the actions of the Kiev regime, which he accused of “serious violations” of humanitarian law.
“We are deeply saddened to see how the leaders of the Secretariat join the Western anti-Russian front, thereby undermining the authority of the U.N.,” Lavrov said.
On Tuesday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged he was not “optimistic” about achieving peace in the Ukraine conflict in the short term. “We need an immediate cease-fire that leads to a solution based on the U.N. Charter and the resolutions of the General Assembly,” he said.
